Dr. Tom Traves today announced the appointment of Dr. Thomas Boran as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry effective 1 July 2008 through 30 June
2013.
In a message to the Dalhousie Community, Dr. Traves said:
Tom Boran, a Dalhousie grad, joined the Faculty of Dentistry as a part-time lecturer in 1979 and has been active in the Faculty ever since. He was Division Head of General Dentistry from 1990 to 1996 and Acting Chair of the Dental Clinical Sciences in 2005 and has been Associate Dean since 2006. Tom is an active teacher/scholar. He has twice won the Professor of the Year Award given by the Dalhousie Dental Student Society (Class of 1992 and Class of 1996) and has received the W.W. Wood Award for the Excellence in Dental Education from the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry twice also (1996, 2005). He is also a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry. A great favorite of students he is also highly respected by his colleagues. I look forward to working closely with Tom Boran as he leads the future development of Faculty of Dentistry. I am confident that the Faculty will continue to prosper under his dedicated leadership.
I also wish to thank Dr. David Precious for his excellent service as Dean since July 2003. The Faculty arguably provides the best education in Canada and much credit for this is due to David. His frank and intelligent contributions to the Deans' Council were always appreciated. On behalf of the Faculty and the University, I extend sincere appreciation for a job well done and best wishes for continued success in his future endeavors.
