Drs. Mary McNally, Ferne Kraglund and Debora Matthews have been awarded a contract from the First Nations and Inuit Health (FNIH) Branch of Health Canada to conduct a survey of the oral health status of Aboriginal children in Labrador. With the assistance of Dr. Greg Jones at FNIH Atlantic Region, this project is a collaboration with the Nunatsiavut government and the Mushua Innu. The researchers will document the clinical oral health status and oral health-related quality of life of children in the Inuit communities of Hopedale and Makkovik, and the Innu community of Natuashish. In the process, the researchers hope to develop meaningful research partnerships with community leaders, community members and health care providers in the region, leading to future research and initiatives to improve the oral health of Aboriginal children in Labrador.
