BDH Students Create Bursary

On Thursday, April 14, graduating students from the Bachelor of Dental Hygiene (BDH) program at the Faculty of Dentistry made a special presentation to the School of Dental Hygiene.

As a class gift to the Faculty, the students decided to form a bursary for future BDH students in financial need. They held a fundraising bake sale and made personal donations in order to make it happen.

"We wanted to make sure that BDH students in the future would have a fund to rely upon in the event of a financial emergency," said Class President Mariam Kamal. "Our hope is that future classes and alumni will continue to 'pay it forward' to ensure that BDH students for a long time to come will be able to overcome financial barriers and succeed in this, our chosen field."

During a reception in their honour, the students presented Dentistry Dean Thomas Boran with a ceremonial cheque. Dr. Boran announced that an anonymous donor had contributed an additional sum, which the Faculty would match. Nancy Neish, Director of the School of Dental Hygiene, subsequently announced that the School would be matching the sum, raising the total contribution to $1,000.

"This incredibly kind gesture speaks to the true spirit of our Bachelor of Dental Hygiene students," said Boran. "They are compassionate and conscientious individuals who are sensitive to the needs of others. We are very proud of them!"
