Dentistry Researchers Awarded NSERC Research Tools and Instruments Grant

Dr. Daniel Boyd of the Department of Applied Oral Sciences, along with co-applicants Dr. Mark Filiaggi (Applied Oral Sciences), Dr. Jeff Dahn (Physics and Chemistry) and Dr Josef Zwanziger (Chemistry), has been awarded $150,000 from the NSERC Research Tools and Instruments Grants Program. These funds will be used to establish a nanoindentation suite for materials characterization. Nanoindentation is a technique used to measure the mechanical properties of materials on very small scales. This award will allow the researchers to establish an internationally recognized state-of-the-art facility that will BoydRTI2011for a range of applications, including medical device development. This resource will also enable a more refined mechanical assessment of biomaterial-tissue interfaces.
