Dr. Mary McNally with co-author Dr. Debora Matthews presented a poster on "The Oral Health of Immigrants and Refugees: Evidence for Physicians' Role" which described the outcomes of an evidence review to assess the role of primary care physicians in the prevention and treatment of common oral conditions in immigrants and refugees. Drs. McNally and Matthews were also co-authors on a poster presented by graduate student Betty Daniels of the Atlantic Regional Training Centre. Betty's poster "Management of Drug Induced Xerostomia in Older Adults: Systematic Review" described a systematic review of the effectiveness of three categories of interventions (saliva substitutes, saliva stimulants, and topical fluoride) used to manage drug induced xerostomia in older adults. Dr. Richard Price's research team and colleagues were represented by five presentations: Christopher Felix gave an oral presentation on "The Importance of Stating Disaggregated Irradiance Values From Curing Lights" which concluded that manufacturers of dental curing lights should present their irradiance values by wavelength, rather than as an aggregate value, in order to reflect the curing requirements of different types of resins. Dr. Richard Price also gave an oral presentation: "Manufacturer's Tip Irradiance vs. Dental Radiometer Reading vs. Irradiance Delivered". This talk presented the results of a study that compared the irradiance delivered at the tip of dental curing lights measured using three difference methods, to the irradiance that is actually received by a restoration. Dr. Price and Christopher Felix were also co-authors on a presentation by a colleague from the Medical College of Georgia, Professor F. Rueggeberg, who gave an oral presentation "Effect of Horizontal Tip Movement on Power and Frequency Delivery". This study concluded that relatively small differences (<2mm) in the horizontal position of curing lights can significantly affect both power and wavelengths of light delivered from polywave LED curing lights to a restoration. Dr. Chris Lee presented a poster on "Effect of Infection Control Barriers on Curing Light Output". This poster used MARC (tm) to compare the effects of disposable infection control barriers on the energy delivered from a curing light. It concluded that clinicians need to increase curing times when using a protective barrier in order to deliver the same amount of energy as they would without a protective barrier. Dr. Sachin Seth presented a poster and discussion on the "Effect of Time and Temperature on Dark-Setting of Cements". This presentation described a study of the micro-hardness of four self-etching dual-cure resin cements under different conditions of setting temperature and time. It was concluded that these dual cure cements take time to harden and the rate at which these cements cure in the dark (e.g., under a PFM crown) is very different for each brand. They should be light cured wherever possible
The Faculty of Dentistry was well represented at the 89th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), which took place in San Diego, March 16-19, 2011. Faculty members authored or co-authored seven oral and poster presentations.
