Dr. Reginald Goodday receives 2011 CAOMS Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes a CAOMS member who has made a major and significant contribution to the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and/or our Association. 

This year's recipient has loomed large over many of aspects of our careers although his initial path into our profession was as convoluted as a mountain road that he so frequently navigated while driving a bus.  This experience coupled with a commerce degree and retail managerial expertise all helped shape him into an extraordinary and exemplary individual with a unique skill set.  Although many here have experienced first hand his mastery of seamanship few of us really understand the devotion, dedication and professionalism that his favorite pastime demands.  It is this same dedication that he thankfully, eventually brought to our profession.

Dr. Reginald Goodday is the present Department Chair of OMFS at Dalhousie University, past examiner in chief at the Royal College, past Chief examiner of OMFS at the Royal College, and past president of the CAOMS.  He has held numerous University and hospital positions.  He is an educator, researcher, mentor and defender of the profession at the local, regional, national and international levels.  His awards and accolades have been many with his proudest likely including the Royal College's highest honor, The Distinguished Service Award and Dalhousie University's highest teaching award, the WW Wood award.

Reg also had the intuition to anticipate two watershed moments in our organization - the need for CAOMS to hire a management group to run our day-to-day activities and with the retirement of Al Swanson, the need to find a suitable replacement for the position of Executive Director.  I think we can all say that our Association has advanced in leaps and bounds because of his foresight that brought us both Ellyn Holzman and UP and Chris Robinson as our Executive Director.
