Heather Doucette and Peggy Maillet Awarded Tobacco Cessation Education Grant
Heather Doucette and Peggy Maillet of the School of Dental Hygiene have been awarded a CAN-ADAPTT (Canadian Action Network for the Advancement, Dessimination and Adoption of Practice-informed Tobacco Treatment) Project grant. The grant will help fund their study titled “Should Tobacco Dependency Education Curriculum Contain a Cultural Component?”. The study will evaluate the effect of the implementation of new tobacco dependency education modules specific to First Nations and Inuit populations in the Dental Hygiene curriculum. Students will be assessed on their cultural competence and knowledge of First Nations and Inuit peoples as well as their perceived preparedness to provide tobacco dependency education to these populations. The investigators believe that enhancing the cultural competence of Dental Hygiene graduates will improve the delivery of tobacco use education to populations facing high rates of tobacco use.
