We are happy to announce that an automated Mitutoyo Hardness Testing unit is now installed at the Department of Clinical Dental Sciences at the Faculty of Dentistry under the guidance of Professor Richard Price. This machine is designed to assist in the analysis of the hardness of materials and is the only machine of its type in Canada. The unit is capable of automatic measurement, by first penetrating the material with a diamond stylus and a selectable load force to measure Knoop or Vickers hardness.
The hardness tests can be carried out in a predetermined grid pattern to map the entire surface of a specimen allowing further analysis and cutting down on the measuring time. The software supplied with the tester allows for total evaluation of the hardness values automatically, and the results supplied are more repeatable than measurements determined by a human operator. Professor Price and his research team are using the hardness tester to evaluate dental filling materials so that they can improve the longevity of dental fillings.
