CIHR NORTH Summer Research Scholarships Awarded

In early April, the CIHR Network for Oral Research Training and Health (NORTH) finalized summer research positions for 2007. Dalhousie recipients of NORTH scholarships this year are Yewon Kim (DDS1), Melanie McLeod (DDS2) and Tara Sutherland (DDS2). The scholarship carries a stipend of up to $6,000 based on a 12-week summer research commitment. CIHR NORTH is a research training program that seeks to match highly qualified dental student applicants with CIHR NORTH-sanctioned research projects either at the applicant’s home university or at any of the dental schools or faculties across Canada. Yewon Kim will be undertaking a project with Dr. Mark Filiaggi (Applied Oral Sciences) looking at the anti-cancer drug delivery potential of condensed calcium phosphate matrices, while Melanie McLeod will be examining the polymerization kinetics of dental resins under the supervision of Dr. Richard Price (Dental Clinical Sciences). In addition, Tara Sutherland will be joining Dr. Yung-Hua Li’s lab (Applied Oral Sciences) to look at gene expression in S. mutans. Finally, Angela Wong, a dental student from UBC, will be working with Dr, Debora Matthews (Dental Clinical Sciences) and the seniors oral health team for 8 weeks this summer to look at treatment follow-up resulting from the seniors oral health assessment pilot project.
