John S. Christie Named Dalhousie University Outstanding Alumnus of the Year

Dr. John S. Christie, DDS’71, will be awarded the A. Gordon Archibald Award at the Dalhousie Annual Dinner on Thursday, October 19, 2006.

Dr. John Christie is being recognized by Dalhousie University for having worked tirelessly to proudly represent Dalhousie and the Faculty of Dentistry since his graduation.

Dr. Christie’s commitment to the Faculty of Dentistry is evidenced by the fact that he returned to the Faculty as a part-time instructor shortly after his own graduation. Dr. Christie has been a part-time faculty member since 1972. During his 34 year tenure at the Faculty he has provided outstanding educational opportunities that inspire our students, while also encouraging alumni to support their alma mater.

His excellence in teaching was recognized by the Class of 2005 who named Dr. Christie as Outstanding Clinical Professor of 2005.

In 1983 Dr. Christie was instrumental in establishing an Alumni Recognition Process to honour Outstanding Alumni of the Faculty of Dentistry. He Chaired the committee in 1983 and 1984 that was formed to determine the recipients of the Outstanding Alumni Award.

Dr. Christie has served on the Faculty of Dentistry Alumni Relations Committee both in the mid to late 1980s and, most recently, from 2000 to present. As a member of the Committee he has been instrumental in directing the activities of the office of Alumni Affairs and Development for the Faculty of Dentistry. He is consistent in his attendance of all alumni events for both Dalhousie and the Faculty of Dentistry and is an excellent promoter of these events amongst other alumni.

In short, Dr. Christie gives selflessly of his time, talents and resources and his commitment to the University and Faculty should be recognized as he truly embodies the spirits of a great Dalhousian – one that can truly inspire students, staff, faculty and other alumni.
