Industrial Contract Renewed

Dr. Mark Filiaggi, Department of Applied Oral Sciences, and co-Principal Investigator Dr. Jeff Dahn, Departments of Physics and Chemistry, were successful in renewing their research contract with Medtronic, Inc, a leading international medical device company, for an additional year at $227,500. This collaborative project – now in its third year – makes use of state-of-the-art combinatorial materials processing capability available in the Dahn lab, and involves the development of high-throughput protein adsorption and cell culture assays for assessing the relative biocompatibility of metal / metal oxide combinatorial libraries. It is hoped that this novel approach will lead to more rapid discovery and selection of materials most appropriate for specific cardiovascular, orthopaedic, and dental implant applications.
