MORRISON, Elmer Stanislaus "Dinny"

MORRISON, Elmer Stanislaus "Dinny" - 79, Halifax, formerly of Sydney, passed away after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Born November 6, 1927, in Sydney, he was a son of the late Archie and Annie Mae (MacLeod) Morrison. Dinny died peacefully with family present May 6, 2007, in Halifax. Dinny attended Sydney Academy High School, St. F.X. B.Sc. '50, B.A. '51 and received his DDS from Dalhousie in 1956. He practiced dentistry with the Dental Corps in Annapolis Royal and Cornwallis in the early years before establishing his practice of almost 30 years in Halifax. He was the dentists' dentist for many years before his retirement in 1990. He was responsible for conceptualizing and starting the dental assistants training program at NSIT where he continued to work on a part-time basis throughout his career. He also contributed as a part-time instructor at the Faculty of Dentistry over the years. He was past president of the Halifax County Dental Society and the Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry, past chairman of the Nova Scotia Dental Association's Public Relations Committee. His contributions to general dentistry in Atlantic Canada are numerous and well-known to those members of the profession of his era. Dinny is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan (Jamael); brother, Maynard, Sydney; sons, John, Archie (Cindy Levangie), Halifax; daughters, Rita, Halifax; and Kelly, Guelph, Ont. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Patricia, Paula, Jennie, Alexandre, Teresa, Emma, Matthew and Daniel. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Regis; brothers, Alex, Clifford "Tibby", Joe, Reggie (all of Sydney) and Jackie (West Bay Road). He was sadly predeceased by his youngest son, Dinny (Jr.), who died of a brain tumor in 1997 at the age of 32. Dinny was past president of Oakfield Golf Club and golf was his passion for many years before and after retirement until he could no longer play. He had been involved as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. He coached baseball and minor hockey reaching perhaps his proudest moment when he coached the Rockingham Eagles Midget A Hockey team to a Maritime championship at the Whitney Pier Arena in 1973. As a youth and while at St. F.X. he excelled in athletics - hockey, baseball, track, and boxing. He played hockey and rugby while at St. F.X. and many times we have heard the story of the famous series of 1951 when St. F.X. played off against the Antigonish Bulldogs to represent Nova Scotia for the Allen Cup. At St. F.X. he was awarded the Larkin Memorial Trophy at graduation which was the highest award given to a student athlete at that time. He played Senior hockey in Buchans, N.L. for one year prior to attending Dalhousie. Dinny was highly regarded by those who knew him in both his professional and personal lives. He had a dry sense of humour, which was ever present except when talking politics! He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him. He has left all of us something to live up to. Visitation Tuesday, May 8, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, in St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road.
