The University Oral Pathology Service provides diagnostic histopathology and cytology services to dentists practicing throughout the Atlantic provinces and Canada. The laboratory receives and processes over 700 specimens each year. Specimens are examined and diagnosed by faculty members of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Sciences, Dr. Robin E. Howell, Dr. John G. L. Lovas and Dr. Bruce A. Wright. An oral pathology report is returned to the contributing clinician.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Laboratory employs 2 part-time technologists for routine histology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and special procedures. Reports are managed by Ruth MacLean.
The laboratory provides teaching material for instruction of dental and dental hygiene students as well as graduate students in oral and maxillofacial surgery and prosthodontics. Dental student rotations through the laboratory provide practical experience and hands on learning opportunities.
The laboratory supports research by students and faculty into the causes and diagnosis of oral disease with an emphasis on premalignant lesions and oral cancer.
