Dr. Daniel Boyd on numerous successes!!! Dr. Daniel Boyd of the Department of Applied Oral Sciences, along with co-applicants, Dr. Mark Filiaggi (AOS), Dr. Jeff Dahn (Physics and Chemistry) and Dr. Josef Zwanziger (Chemistry), has been awarded $150,000 from NSERC Research Tools and Instrument Grants Program. These funds will be used to establish a nanoindentation suite for materials characterization. Nanoindentation is a technique used to measure the mechanical properties of materials on very small scales. This award will allow the researchers to establish an internationally recognized state-of-the-art facility that will be used for a range of applications, including medical device development. This resource will also enable a more refined mechanical assessment of biomaterial-tissue interfaces.
Dr. Daniel Boyd (AOS), in collaboration with Dr. Robert Abraham of the Department of Radiology, have received Early Stage Commercialization Funding (ESCF) from Innovacorp to expedite the commercialization of a proprietary medical device called OccluRad. OccluRad is a radiopaque biomaterial, which may be injected into blood vessels in order to block blood flow to a target tissue (a process called embolizaiton). Embolization is intrinsically radiopaque and its placement can be monitored using conventional imaging techniques without the need for contrast dyes; this feature, in combination with controlled biocompatibility give the OccluRad technology significant advantages over current state-of-the-art embolizaiton materials. The ESCF will be used to enhance the safety and efficacy data suite for OccluRad and examine optimal clinical protocols for safe use. The initial target application of OccluRad is the treatment of uterine fibroids, but the researchers ultimately see great potential for use of the technology in the wide field of vascular embolization procedures ($49,5k).
Dr. Daniel Boyd in the Department of Applied Oral Sciences has been awarded an Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF) investment from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to develop minimally invasive systems for bone augmentation. Together with team members Dr. Mark Filiaggi (AOS), Dr. Robert Abraham (Intervention Radiologist, CDHA), Dr. Michael Dunbar (Orthopaedic Surgeon, Biomedical Engineering and CDHA) and Barbara Campbell (Associate Director, Industry Liaison and Innovation), this research project will seek to innovate ? through a comprehensive approach involving development of new biomaterials, surgical devices and protocols ? minimally invasive clinical procedures to address bone loss or implant instability, leading to reduced recovery times and risk of infection while also potentially avoiding full hip or knee implant replacement. This project, with estimated costs of $2.5 million, will receive approximately $1.7 million from the AIF Fund over a 5-year period. Bearna Medical Ltd., a research and development company in novel bioactive glasses based in Ireland, will provide additional funding and expertise as the primary industrial partner.

As you can see, we have been a very busy and productive Faculty since January 25, 2011, our last Faculty Meeting.
Another reason to celebrate this evening is we have a motion this evening to formally approve our new Academic Plan Document. This document is the result of over a year of hard work by our Faculty Family members and Dr. Jeanie Cockell our trusted friend and facilitator.
You will remember last June 14 and June 15, 2010, our Faculty Retreat was devoted to this process. The actual Faculty Retreat Report was titled ?Appreciative Inquiry, Engagement, Academic Planning and Professional Practice?. Jeanie was our facilitator.
The design was to have a broad consultation with our various stakeholders and incorporate the process of Appreciative Inquiry ?Dalhousie University, Faculty of Dentistry At Its Best?. A process to facilitate positive change.
The retreat explored what is working well in the Faculty of Dentistry, built on our strengths and started preparing us for the future (challenges and opportunities).
The next step the Working Group reconvened with Dr. Cockell as our facilitator and with the faculty report in hand we drafted our new strategic vision.
On March 2, 2011, we provided a light lunch and discussion of the strategic vision document via poster presentations again facilitated by Dr. Cockell in a town hall format.
With your feedback we made some revisions and had the Working Group give it a final review before presenting it tonight.
It is my belief this document provides us with focus and direction for the Faculty for many years to come. Since the foundation of our academic plan was based on the University?s Strategic Focus Document we should feel quite comfort our Faculty future direction will move forward in unison with the University Strategic Plan.
I am very proud of what we have accomplished to date and look forward to the numerous action plans which will be guided by the principles we had agreed to in this academic plan.
I would like to thank the Working Group for their time, dedication and vision to assist us in this important process. They are Cynthia Andrews, Ron Bannerman, Jon Bruhm, Blaine Cleghorn, Dianne Crouse, Mark Filiaggi, Jack Gerrow, Curtis Gregoire, Chris Lee, Yung-Hua Li, Bob Loney, John Lovas, Peggy Maillet, Deb Matthews, Mary McNally, Bruce Moxley, Nancy Neish, Nancy Webb.
I would also like to thank everyone for their input, staff, faculty, students, members of the university community, Nova Scotia Dental Association and College of Nova Scotia Dental Hygienists. A special heart-felt thank you to Dr. Jeanie Cockell our facilitator, friend and colleague. Thank you Jeanie!
Thank you all for helping us ?Believe in the Beauty of a Dream?. We as a Faculty of Dentistry are committed to making our dreams come true.
Robert Kennedy once said ?It is not enough to understand or just to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task.
Together we will shape the future!
Thank you.

Since our last meeting we had two very successful convocations, May 26, Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Bachelor of Dental Hygiene and May 27, Doctorate in Dental Surgery. I want to thank everyone for making the convocations and dinners honoring our graduates such special events. It is the highlight of their academic studies.
We also had a very special Retreat this year and followed nicely on the heels of our new Academic Plan. I have and will continue to work with the Assistant Deans, Department Chairs and Director of the School of Dental Hygiene to ensure we begin the process of curriculum renewal and investigate clinical teaching models for our new clinic.
An update on our Capital Campaign efforts shows we have raised $2,642,405 to date. With the assistance of our new development officer Lisa Weatherhead, we will continue our journey to our $12 million dollar mark.
Since our last meeting we have celebrated our Spring Luncheon with our kick off to the 100th Anniversary/New Website and celebration cake). Jon Bruhm will give us an update on the next few months.
During our Spring Luncheon we honored four staff family members, 30 year of service Sue Corkum, Kathy Lunn and 20 years of service Denise Lynds-Brown. As well we officially honored Heather Greenwood on her retirement.
In August the CDA Convention is in Halifax and I look forward to a strong Dalhousie presence. It is an opportunity to invite our alumni back for the 100th Anniversary. We will be hosting a reception on Friday, August 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the World Trade and Convention Centre and an exhibit in the Trade Show.
Please enjoy your vacation, ensure you re-charge the batteries for the end of August will soon be upon us.
Food for thought as we review our year and plan to next year.
?For a long time is seemed to me that real life was about to begin, but there was always some obstacle in the way. Something had to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.? Bette Howland.
Thank you everyone for a great year. Enjoy the summer!
