Welcome Back!
A new Academic Year! New additions to our family in DDS, DDH, BDH, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dental Residency Program, and new this fall, two students in the Masters in Periodontics Program.
Our last meeting was on June 22, 2011, and since then we have had a little rest and relaxation but the activities of the Faculty have continued to occur and progress. I would like to highlight a few:
- Welcome back to Dr. Joanne Clovis who has been on sabbatical for the past year.
- We have just finished celebration of the CDA convention held in Halifax for August 4 ? 6, 2011. Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry was well represented by Faculty, Staff and Students at the Trade Exhibit and a highly successful Alumni Reception held at Windows Restaurant in the WTCC. Thank you to Jon Bruhm, our Alumni Officer, Nancy Webb, Dianne Crouse, Rita Davis, Marilyn Klein, our students, Ben and Noelle Lamarche, Marianne Dobbin, Ian MacIntyre, Natasha Chishti, Jared Zeggil, Ian Dugas, Asraa El-Darahali.
Congratulations To:
- Ms. Natasha Chishti who was honoured at the Pierre Fauchard Academy Luncheon on Friday, August 5, 2011 as Dalhousie?s Student Clinician representative at the CDA/Dentsply Competition.
- Ms. Olu Brown, our graduating class representative for 2011, featured in Dalhousie Magazine Spring 2011.
- Dr. Richard Price picture feature in the Dalhousie Magazine as well in the featured article ?Together We Can?. Through research as in the case of Dr. Price and how his research and innovation has created knowledge workers and spin-off companies that find commercial application.
- Ms. Diane Crouse has accepted an 18-month position as Manager of Continuing Dental Education. Diane will continue to work with Dr. Bob Loney and the CDE Committee to foster, promote, and innovate our enterprise of life long learning.
- Dr. Mary McNally who received the Distinguished Service Award from L?Academic Pierre Fauchard on Friday, August 5, 2011 in Halifax at the PFA Luncheon.
- Tracy Doyle and her husband on the announcement of the birth of their two boys William and Alexander, August 15, 2011.
- The following Faculty members on the completion or soon to be completed Masters in Education this summer, Kim Haslam, Mark Knechtel, Sachin Seth, and Cynthia Andrews.
- Heather Doucette on winning the Provincial Triathlon held in Yarmouth on the weekend of August 13th 2011.
- Cara Tax for having a paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Dental Education titled ? A Model for Cultivating Faculty Development within a Community of Practice?.
- Dr. Richard Price on receiving a grant of $23,000.00 from the company Blue Light Analytics.
- Mr. Bruce Moxley on his retirement announcement December 31, 2011. 36 years of us is enough! The common sentiment is ?Bruce you can?t retire!?. We wish him and Sue all the best and we will have an opportunity to celebrate with Bruce later this Fall.
- Dr. Reg Goodday received the Distinguished Service Award for long standing contributions to the oral and maxillofacial specialty and the dentistry profession from the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
- Dr. Danny Boyd and co-investigator Dr. Mark Filiaggi on the awarding of a $148,600 Establishment Grant by the NSHRF ?Bioactive and Stimula Responsive Systems for the Atraumatic Restorative Technique in Dentistry?.
- Jon Bruhm, our Alumni Officer, summer students, Meghan Dunphy and Noele Lamarche, 2nd Year Dental Hygiene on a very successful launch of our Centennial Website. Please visit it, share with friends and colleagues, look at the video produced by So Jung Lee with assistance from Ahmad Hussein, two third year dentistry students. Well done everyone and thank you!

Finally I wish everyone a successful and productive academic year.
