Faculty of Dentistry Guide to Clinical Research
A Faculty of Dentistry
Guide to Clinical Research has recently been created and is available at www.dentistry.dal.ca/research/GuideClinRes.pdf.
New and experienced
dentistry researchers who are considering conducting research that will involve
using Faculty of Dentistry clinic resources are encouraged to consult this
guide early in their research planning process. Examples of clinic resources
include, clinic space, personnel time, instrument and equipment use and access
to clinic records.
Comments and
suggestions for improving the document are most welcome.
Summer Research Program - Call for Student Applications
The DeanŐs Office is
pleased to offer paid summer research positions again this year that will
enable students to take part in faculty-directed research projects. This is a
great opportunity for students to gain exposure to – and obtain hands-on
experience in – health sciences research.

The NSERC Award
HolderŐs Guide 2011 is now available.
It contains important information regarding the payment and administration of
NSERC awards.
CIHRŐs Response to FAQŐs
regarding the Open Operating Grants Competition Success Rate
CIHR
has developed a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document in response to
questions from the research community about reporting of the results of the

Upcoming Consultations on Tri-Agency Framework:
Responsible Conduct of Research
CIHR, the Natural
Sciences and Engineering Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council, in collaboration with the Association of Universities and
Colleges of Canada, continue to update and strengthen the current Tri-Council
Policy Statement: Integrity in Research and Scholarship (http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/NSERC-CRSNG/Policies-Politiques/tpsintegrity-picintegritie_eng.asp). Beginning in mid-March, the research community will
be invited to provide input on the Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct
of Research consultation document.
The
consultation document will be accessible through each Agency's Web site from
mid-March to the end of April. The feedback will be considered when finalizing
the Framework, which is expected for June 2011.
CIHR Institute Advisory Boards 2011 Renewal
CIHR is renewing membership for its 13 Institute
Advisory Boards (IABs). On average, each Institute will appoint 1 to 2 members
for this cycle.

1) Research
Trainee Funding: Scotia Support Grant
This is the pilot
year for the Scotia Support Grant. This competitive, peer reviewed funding
opportunity will run every two years and is open to researchers/supervisors.
The purpose of the Scotia Support Grant is to:
á
Support additional
training opportunities within vibrant and productive research programs;
á
Enable funded
researchers/supervisors to recruit the level and number of research trainees
needed to enhance their programs of research;
á
Provide flexibility
for all levels of academic trainees to be engaged within Nova Scotia based
research programs that are generating knowledge relevant to the NSHRF health
research priority areas; and
á
Contribute to the
sustainability of local research programs that have the potential to impact and
improve the health of Nova Scotians, while also training tomorrowŐs health
researchers.

2) Rapid
Knowledge Synthesis and Jurisdictional Review (Priority Topics)
The purpose of this funding opportunity it to provide a high-quality
rapid knowledge synthesis that will address priority health issues. The
relevant research areas include:
á
Current practices and
potential application of teleconsult/telemedicine
á
Collaborative emergency
centres
á
Process improvement
methodology
Rapid knowledge synthesis accelerates all phases of synthesis
production – application, review, research, knowledge translation –
to offer timely, accessible and relevant evidence to decision makers. The
intent of the rapid knowledge synthesis is to generate information through
analysis of existing literature that can be used to inform policy, practice,
and program development issues of importance.
Various forms of knowledge synthesis are invited. Up to one synthesis
per topic will be funded. Each funding opportunity will provide funding of up
to $50,000 for a period of four months.
